50 family-friendly Truth or Dare prompts (kid-safe, ages 8+)
Truth or Dare is one of the oldest party games we still play — versions of it appear in early-modern European parlour-game manuals and the modern format is documented in folklore collections from the 19th century onward. The reason it has survived four centuries is that it is, at heart, an ice-breaker disguised as a game. The dare is the warm-up; the truth is the part that builds the bond. The problem is that most online Truth or Dare lists were written for adult drinking parties and re-used for kids, with predictable results.
This list is the opposite. Every prompt has been used at a family game night with under-twelves at the table, in English and (where it works) in Urdu. The Friendly pack in Game Night ships with these and a few hundred more.
Why G-rated questions actually work better
The pop-psych intuition is that the spicier the question, the more fun the game. The child-development literature points the other way. Vygotsky's Mind in Society (Harvard University Press, 1978) frames play as a zone in which children rehearse social rules; the game works because the rule-set is safe enough to take risks inside. The American Academy of Pediatrics' Family Media Plan guidance recommends co-play activities precisely because they create low-stakes shared attention. A question that embarrasses a nine-year-old isn't "edgy", it's de-stabilising, and the game ends with one person quietly opting out.

25 gentle dares (ages 8+)
- Speak only in a whisper for the next three minutes.
- Do your best impression of someone in this room — they have to guess who.
- Sing the chorus of any song without using words (humming only).
- Hold a plank position while counting to twenty.
- Tell a joke. If nobody laughs, tell another one.
- Send a heart emoji to the third person in your contacts list.
- Walk like a penguin from one end of the room to the other.
- Speak in a robot voice until your next turn.
- Do five jumping jacks while saying the alphabet backwards (you can stop at M).
- Balance a book on your head for thirty seconds.
- Try to lick your elbow for ten seconds (you can't).
- Make up a short song about the snack you're eating.
- Do your best cat impression — meow and all.
- Take a selfie making your most surprised face and show it to the group.
- Eat the next bite of food with your eyes closed and describe it.
- Stand on one leg until your next turn.
- Compliment everyone in the room, one by one, with a different reason for each.
- Do a 15-second TED talk on why pizza is or isn't a sandwich.
- Hop like a frog around your chair three times.
- Whisper a secret handshake greeting to the person on your right and teach it to them.
- Talk only in questions for the next two minutes.
- Recite the last text message you sent in a Shakespeare voice.
- Do a slow-motion replay of your last move.
- Make a paper airplane and fly it across the room.
- Speak with an accent (any accent) until your next turn.
Five Urdu prompts that work well
Urdu Truth or Dare lists in Pakistani family contexts tend to lean on idioms and shared cultural references. These five are from the Friendly pack and translate naturally:
- Aapke nani-dadi ki sabse achi yaad kya hai? ("What's your favourite memory of your grandparents?")
- Agar aapko aaj sirf ek roti se din guzarna ho, to woh kis cheez ki hogi? ("If you had to live the whole day on one roti, what would you fill it with?")
- Apni khaali class room mein aap sabse pehle kis ka takhalus rakhenge? ("In your empty classroom, whose pen-name would you write first?")
- Aapki favourite chai kese banti hai — doodh patti, mix, ya elaichi? ("Your favourite chai — milk-only, mixed, or cardamom?")
- Apne family ke kis member ki aawaaz aap nakal kar sakte hain? ("Which family member's voice can you mimic?")
How to run a kid-safe Truth or Dare
Three rules I've found work at mixed-age tables:
- Veto is free. Anyone can skip a prompt without penalty — that's it, just skip and the next player goes. The freedom to skip is what makes the game safe enough to keep playing.
- Adults play too. The biggest mistake parents make is observing instead of participating. Kids learn the format from watching adults answer.
- Stop on a laugh. Once you've had a really big group laugh, that's the right time to switch games. End on a high. (For why end-on-a-high matters, see how to host a game night.)
